- This tutorial will show you how to create impressions for text or other graphics.

- Use the Text Tool to create some text to decorate. The text tool will automatically create a new layer.
- Create a new Layer called "Text Impression".

- Click on the foreground color to open the Change Foreground Color dialog. In this dialog, choose a medium-grey color. To make this job easier, you may simply enter "808080" in the HTML notation text field.

- Use the paint tool to completely paint the "Text Impression" layer.
- In the menu, choose Filters -> Map -> Bump Map.

- In the Bump Map dialog, set the Bump map drop-down to the text field. You should see the impression of the text in the preview window. Here you can play with the options such as the Azimuth, Elevation, and Depth. It is recommend that your options create a nice, crisp impression.

- Once you are happy with your options, click OK and you will see the impression embedded into the Text Impression layer.
- While the Text Impression layer is still active, choose Colors -> Color to Alpha in the menu.

- In the Color to Alpha dialog, click the color in the From selector and set this as you did the Foreground Color before. Again the HTML notation of "808080" will do the trick. Click OK and you will see your transparent impression in the preview window.
- Click OK in the Color to Alpha dialog to apply the changes to your layer.

- Now your text should really stand out. You can use the Hue-Saturation tool on the text layer to modify the color of the text, or modify the opacity of your Text Impression layer on the layer dialog if the impression is too bold. Visit the tutorials section to find other techniques that you can use to spruce up your text.
